YouVersion Bible App Review

February 28, 2011 — 11 Comments

I think we can all agree that we don’t carry our Bibles everywhere we go.  We do however (for the most part) carry our mobile phones everywhere. It has become part of our culture.

Occasionally, there are those moments of inspiration that hits us in the weirdest of places. You reach into your bag and realize that you don’t have access to a Bible. Fortunately you have your mobile phone with you.  Now there is a way to have your Bible with you as long as you have your mobile phone.

Lifechurch.tv has a team of great developers who have released one of the best Bible apps for smartphones. Their philosophy is very simple: to impact the world using innovative technology, engaging people into relationships with God by reading the Bible.

So, what’s so great about this app?

  1. Versions: 41 Translations in 22 Languages. There’s a lot here for almost everyone.
  2. Notes: You can create notes of passages you are reading. You can keep the notes public or private. Your choice
  3. Search: Living in the age of fast search (Thanks Google), the Bible app has a search function for searching specific keywords.
  4. Syncable bookmarks: You can bookmark verses and they will sync with the cloud so that you can see your bookmarks on your smartphone and online (one drawback is that you can only bookmark one verse at a time)
  5. Reading Plans: More than 50 different reading plans. The plans give you a progress bar and help you catch up when you fall behind.
  6. Share: You can share verses via Facebook, Twitter, Email and SMS. A great way to encourage a friend who is getting his wisdom tooth pulled, “My son, do not let wisdom and understanding out of your sight – Prov. 3:21 (Ha!)
  7. Adjustable font: Half blind? No worries, you can make the text as BIG and as small as you want.
  8. Excellent support: The folks from YouVersion are really responsive and update the app consistently. You can be confident that they won’t allow the app to die a slow death.

I think it’s fair to say that the developers for the Youversion Bible app have done an excellent job at giving us tools so we can read, highlight and share God’s word.

Youversion’s Bible app is available for iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Palm Web OS, Java, Symbian, Mobile Web and for the iPad.

  1. You forgot the best part: isn’t it FREE!? At least I thought it was.

  2. One of the other cool things about youversion is the “live” event integration…

    • I agree. But I don’t really see the “small” church(es) using this feature. I may be wrong, but it’s catered more to large churches and congregations.

      • I have to disagree with you there – we used it for a long time… we were able to gather prayer requests, and a lot of interactivity (with polls & questions), we even had at least one family visit Thrive because they saw the listing… the feature can absolutely be used for small churches.

The only reason we don’t use it now, is because the service was shotty in terms of up-time, and I got frustrated with that.

I really don’t see anything in that service that precludes smaller churches.

        • Interesting. Good to know. I think the technology is there for everyone to use. I wonder how many small churches do use it though.

I have to look more into this feature.

  3. Been using this app on my Droid for awhile now. I use it all the time when I lead my high school small group. I’ll throw one of them my phone with the app open and have them lookup a verse to read for the group to process. We always encourage our kids to bring their Bibles with them to youth group. They used to say… “Graham, you don’t have YOUR Bible!” and I would just whip out this app. :)
