Vimeo, the artist’s choice for video publishing and sharing, has announced the launch of their music store. Here is the blurb from the email I received:
Introducing Music Store: As many of you know, finding music for your videos can be somewhat… well, painful. Licensing music on your own can be confusing and finding good free music can take forever. So we decided to create Vimeo Music Store, your one-stop-shop for finding, discovering and licensing high quality music for your videos. With over 45,000 tracks to choose from, you’re sure to find the perfect track for that new video you’re creating.
Video, link, and thoughts after the break.
I can attest to the difficulty in finding affordable, quality music for video productions. You usually have to invest in expensive DVD/CD collections of “royalty free” music, or be lucky enough to know musicians who would give you a good break on recording pieces for you.
After sampling their collection, I found lots of stuff I really liked, some free, the rest an affordable $1.99. Now, there is a caveat… that $1.99 price is for a personal license, limited to personal use. If you want to use a track commercially (this includes use for non-prof’s) then you must buy the commercial license, which is much less affordable ($99). Boo.
That’s a big disappointment, really – especially when you can usually find DVD collections for $100 or less. Also, there are other online services out there, like JewelBeat and Pond5, that provide much better pricing for commercial use.
